Grading Policy

Every couple of weeks or so, I post assignment scores on the web.  Note that the page on the web may be up to a week or two behind.

Students are still required to update their own personal Assignment Record Sheets. If an error in grading is found, kindly bring the paper to me, and I will make the corrections, with an apology if I made an error.  Papers need to be kept for the entire quarter;  I can not make the correction if the student does not have the paper to show me.   If the student believes the paper has been tuned in, the "No Name" bin should be checked.    I can not give credit if there is not a name on it.  I will not guess as to whose it is.

Scoring guidelines:

  • Most assignments are scored out of 10 points.    Tests, Projects and longer assignments usually score more than 10 pts.
  • Students may redo an assignment if the score is 6 or below.  I usually do not give a score below a 5 if some effort has been made.
  • A student who does not understand what to do should turn in a paper that says "I don't understand this."  This will earn a '5' or 50% credit, subject to follow up.  Work Not Handed In (NHI) scores 0.   This does bad things to one's average.
  • Tests may be corrected for additional points with permission only.
  • If there is a 'See Me' or  'Fix/Finish' marked on the page, it is the student's responsibility to do so.  A "See Me" earns 5 points.  A Fix/Finish earns less.  When fixed, the student may earn more points.  "NA"  (Not Acceptable work) earns 0 points.
  • A blank in the gradebook has not been averaged in yet.
  • Extra Credit is scored out of 0 points - each extra credit point can be thought of as raising one assignment one point - very valuable.
  • Work may be turned in late, subject to a 10% penalty; and up to 20% if turned in very late.

Grading Scale:

A+   Consistently above 100%; given rarely B+   88 - 90 % C+   75 - 80 % P:  making Progress; with effort
A      92 % and up B     82 - 86 % C     65 - 75 % I:  Incompete - work missing
A-    90 - 92 % B-    80 - 82 % C-    60 - 65 % U:  < 60 %;   Unacceptable.

Interim Reports are sent out as an "S" (all or most work done; passing grade);   "S-" (some or much work missing; passing grade);
"U"  (much work missing; failing grade)

Assignment scores are used as the basis for Quarterly Report Card Grades, but  classroom participation, effort, ability, consistency,
and other individualized considerations are factored in.

Each quarter grading period begins fresh.  A bad (or good) quarter will not affect the next one.
